Reflections for Change Submission

Reflections for Change began as a project in which artists created work on mirrors to express their feelings regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

When I was invited to participate by the project’s founder, Italian artist Elena Morizio, I was so honored and so grateful for the opportunity to represent South Dakota though the creation of a piece (seen left). I wrote the following to accompany my image:

"South Dakota's failure to recognize the COVID-19 pandemic as a public health emergency has led to the heavy politicization of wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. As a result, those of us who do wear masks in an effort to keep ourselves, our families, and others safe feel as though we are entering a battle for our health and safety each time we leave our homes. When I am at the grocery store and walk past shoppers proving political points by refusing to wear their masks, I visualize the air filling with COVID-19 cells. In my submission to Reflections for Change, I am battling the weapon of my enemies armed with nothing but my mask."
